OPC-3 And Antioxidants

Tip! Understanding the function of antioxidants is not hard and taking advantage of their properties is quite simple. Diseases like Cancer and arteriosclerosis, are unable to advance and spread throughthe body, thanks to the actions of antioxidants like Vitamin C, A, E Beta-carotene and others.

OPC-3™, also known as oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC’s) is made from a combination of grape seed, pine bark, red wine extracts, and also bilberry and citrus extracts.

OPC-3™ is thought to be a free radical neutralizer or antioxidant. It is also thought to support the circulatory system and strengthen capillaries.

Antioxidants are a chemical compound or substance that are thought to prevent cellular damage. Organic substances such as vitamin E, vitamin C, or beta carotene, for example, are thought to protect cells from damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals.

Free radicals can form when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Free radicals can be beneficial in neutralizing bacteria and viruses. But in excess, they produce harmful oxidation that can damage cells.

Antioxidants are molecules which can safely interact with free radicals to stop any damage to vital molecules.

Antioxidants, such as OPC-3™, are believed to be effective in helping to prevent cancer, heart disease, and stroke. They are also thought to play a role in slowing the aging process.

Tip! There is also an amazingly high concentration of antioxidants useful in combating premature aging. The proanthocyanidine contents in Acai Berries contain 10 to 30 times the anthocyanins (these are the purple colored antioxidants) of red wine per volume.

Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants and their are health supplements on the market such as OPC-3™ that are marketed as antioxidants.

There are conflicting reports on the benefits of antioxidants and how much to take. So in short, supplements should not be taken to replace, a healthy, well balanced diet. It should be taken to supplement it.

The Newbie’s Guide to Antioxidants

Tip! Living in today’s very toxic world, antioxidants deserve a special place in the area of nutritional supplements and are certainly worth examining closer to see what they are all about and learn how we can implement them into our daily routine.

The metabolization of oxygen by the body releases damaging by-products which effect cell membranes and other structures like cellular proteins, lipids and DNA. Antioxidants act as cell protectors, thwart these harmful by products, called free radicals, by binding with them, thus converting them into non-damaging compounds, before they have a chance to cause any harm. Degenerative effects of free radical can cause widespread damages to several organs of the body including the eyes, the heart and even affect the entire immune system. Thus antioxidants are critical to prevention of illnesses and to increase longevity.

In order to bolster the body’s defense mechanism, and to counter this activity by free radicals, a lot of research is being done to study how the quantity of antioxidants can be included in the diet or added through a dietary supplement.

Tip! Quite simply put, at the molecular and cellular levels, antioxidants serve to deactivate certain particles called free radicals. In humans, free radicals usually come in the form of O2, the oxygen molecule.

Types of antioxidants and their sources

There are a variety of antioxidants, including vitamins A, B-5, C, E, selenium, zinc, manganese, flavonoids, lycopene, luteins, and carotenes among others. The effects of a diet rich in foods that contain antioxidants is a subject of great interest to researchers across the world. For instance it has been observed that a diet rich in tomatoes, which contains the antioxidant lycopene, can help reduce the incidence of prostrate cancer in men.

Different types of antioxidants are found in a variety of foods and therefore it is recommended that ones eat a healthy diet of varied fruits and vegetables. For instance manganese is found in milk and nuts as well as seafood; beta-carotene is found in carrots, spinach pumpkin and parsley, vitamin C is found in abundance in citrus fruits, strawberries, capsicum and broccoli.

Tip! In looking at antioxidants in coffee, it’s important to remember that the consumer must like the flavoring of the coffee in order to drink enough coffee to reap the most benefit.

Antioxidant supplements

Scientific evidence suggests that antioxidants are far more effective when consumed in their naturally occurring form rather than in tablet form through supplements. High levels of antioxidants, much above the recommended dietary intake, can also be damaging to the body. So the best answer is to have a balanced diet. However, if you are an athlete or a fitness enthusiast, or if you maintain irregular eating habits you may be advised to have nutritional supplements containing antioxidants. Do consult your doctor before taking any supplements.
